Daniela Hantuchova ends Riske’s run at US Open, reaches quarterfinals

Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova is through to the US Open 2013 quarterfinals after ending the run of 23-year old Alison Riske of United States 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Hantuchova, 30, is a former top-ten player and was at her element and produced another victory in yet another three set thriller.

Up next for Hantuchova is the winner of the Victoria Azarenka vs Ana Ivanovic fourth round match. The Azarenka-Ivanovic match was cancelled due to rain delay.

“Today’s weather forecast called for intermittent rain until 8 p.m. The tournament’s priority was to complete all matches that were in progress and to complete all men’s singles matches scheduled for the day. With the unpredictable weather forecast, the decision was made to release both Ivanovic and Azarenka early enough in the day in order to bring them back as the first match tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m,” USTA said in a statement.

This is Hantuchova’s first trip to the US Open quarterfinals since 2002.

“It felt really good today,” she said.
