Daniela Hantuchova fought off match points in victory over Israel’s Julia Glushko

Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova was in a brink of defeat so many times in the second set against Julia Glushko of Israel on Sunday’s US Open third round match but the former top-five player toughed it out to close the set and fought harder in the third to emerge as the victor 36 75 76(4).

Glushko came through qualifying and earned her way to the third round of a Grand Slam event for the first time. She was on course to make it another round further when she was holding four match points but failed to close them out.

Up next for Hantuchova is American wildcard entrant Alison Riske who upset seventh-seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic.

Hantuchova has reached the quarterfinals or better four times at a Grand Slam event with her best finish coming from the Australian Open semifinals in 2008.
