Defending titlist Andy Murray advances to US Open fourth round

World number three Andy Murray surged into the US Open 2013 fourth round after eliminating Florian Mayer of Germany 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2. The British tennis star will next face Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.

Murray, the defending champion at the US Open, struggled in the opening set but eventually found his game to seal the next two sets with ease.

“It was a tough match, especially the beginning,” said Murray. “I started the second set well. I started hitting the ball a little bit cleaner, was more aggressive after that and I finished it well.”

Murray will have to be wary with his fourth round opponent. Istomin reached the fourth round by upsetting 20th seed Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, 6-1.

“Technically he’s very sound,” Murray said in reference to Istomin. “He’s a good player. He hits the ball very flat. He served extremely well today, I think, in his match. I saw some of the stats at the end. He’s played well. He had a very good match with Novak [Djokovic] in Montreal. He’s had some good wins this week, as well.”
