Former champ Lleyton Hewitt through to US Open 2013 fourth round

Former top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt of Australia reached the fourth round of the US Open 2013 Championships after he defeated Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 on Sunday. The match lasted nearly three hours. Up next for the two-time Grand Slam champion is another Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

“I came out aggressive at the start and I played well right at the start to get up that early break. That was sort of the telling point for that first set,” the 32-year old said.

“Whenever I was under pressure I didn’t give him too many chances to run around and take second cuts on my second serve, which was positive,” he added. “If the right ball’s there, I think I’m a good enough volleyer to back it up and play aggressive tennis out there.”

Hewitt has a 5-1 head to head series lead over Youzhny and their most recent meeting was at the Cincinnati Masters last year where the Australian won in straight sets.

Hewitt won the US Open in 2002.
