Gilles Simon wins second Moselle Open title

Frenchman Gilles Simon won his second career Moselle Open title on Sunday after denying compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the achievement of winning this event for the third straight year. A lot of great things are happening for Simon right now, with the birth of his second son Valentin less than two weeks ago.

“I cannot become a father every week,” Simon said. “It’s a beautiful story for sure. Unfortunately my wife and children couldn’t be here today. It was a great moment for me because I missed the birth of our first child and this time I was able to be there. I was very happy about that.”

Simon first won this event in 2010 after defeating Mischa Zverev for the title.

For his title-winning run, Simon earned €74,000 plus 250 ranking points. This is Simon’s 11th career ATP title and will propel him back in the world’s top 15. Tsonga goes home with €39,000 plus 150 ranking points. He’s still in the running to qualify for the year-end ATP World Tour Finals.

“I’m sad about losing the final today, but I’m happy with my week,” Tsonga said. “Gilles was just better than me today. He’s a great player and he was very solid during the whole match.”
