Italy’s Camila Giorgi stuns Wozniacki at US Open to earn fourth-round berth

Qualifier Camila Giorgi of Italy produced 46 winners to defeat sixth-seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark at the US Open 2013 third round match on Saturday. Up next for Giorgi is fellow countrywoman Roberta Vinci in the fourth round.

Wozniacki drew first blood by winning the opening set 6-4 but Giorgi surged in the next two sets and concluded the match with a forehand winner 46 64 63

“I loved playing on that court. My goal was to be there, and it was amazing to play there,” Giorgi said. “Even if my first set wasn’t really good, I stayed really focused, just focusing on every point after that. And even if I did mistakes, it’s because I was trying to play my game out there, and my tactics.”

Giorgi missed the Northern American hardcourt season due to a shoulder injury but the rest since Wimbledon may have paid off for her.

“The nine months before Wimbledon you can’t really count because I was playing every tournament injured, so I stopped for two months after Wimbledon this year,” Giorgi said. “So this was my first tournament back, and I feel good now. My shoulder is good. So I’m really happy about everything now.”

Giorgi and Vinci will be competing against each other on tour for the first time.
