Maria Sharapova aims to participate at WTA Championships 2013 in Istanbul

World number three Maria Sharapova revealed in an interview with Larry King that her short-term goal for now is to be healthy enough to compete at the prestigious WTA Championships 2013 that will take place in Istanbul in October.

The Russian tennis superstar has pulled out of the recently concluded US Open Championships due to bursitis in her right shoulder, the same shoulder that was surgically repaired a few years ago that required her to take a break from the WTA Tour. Currently, she needs to take two to three months off for the condition to heal.

“That’s my goal, I really want to finish with that tournament this year, but I also want to heal my shoulder,” she said. “It’s going to take as much time as it needs, but bursitis is a bit tricky because there is not much you can do for it except wait for it to get better and that’s tough as I’m not a very patient person.”

Sharapova was a runner-up last year at the year-end Championships. She lost in the final to Serena Williams. Sharapova is a former winner at this event in 2004 where she defeated Williams for the title. She also reached the final at this year-end championships in 2007 but lost to Justine Henin.
