Martina Hingis withdraws from WTA Pan Pacific Open 2013

Former top-ranked tennis star Martina Hingis has withdrawn her participation at the upcoming WTA Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Tokyo, Japan later this month. The “Swiss Miss” was given a wildcard entry in the doubles competition.

“She will be absent from this tournament due to personal reasons,” the Pan Pacific Open organizers said in a press release on Monday.

The 32-year old tennis legend came back from retirement last July but opted to play only in doubles competition. However, her results have been a disappointment, losing in second round of three warm-up events leading to the US Open. At the US Open, she lost her opening round matches in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles events.

The $2.4 million Pan Pacific Open which will run from September 22 to 28 features a star-studded field including top-ranked Serena Williams, number two Victoria Azarenka and third-ranked Maria Sharapova.
