Novak Djokovic remains number one even if he loses US Open final to Rafael Nadal

There’s a silver lining if world number one Novak Djokovic loses at the US Open 2013 final against rival Rafael Nadal. He still gets to keep the top-ranking, albeit with a smaller lead.

The ATP World Tour has already released the rankings for the week starting September 9. Since the US Open 2013 Men’s Singles final match is still going to be contested at Monday night, the final ranking points for Djokovic and Nadal is not yet final.

Based on the rankings, Djokovic has 10,980 ranking points while Nadal has 10,060 points by virtue of reaching the final. The winner of the US Open 2013 men’s title will get additional 800 ranking points.

Swiss star Roger Federer moves one spot up to number six, replacing Juan Martin Del Potro who failed to defend quarterfinal points in New York. Semifinalists Richard Gasquet and Stanislas Wawrinka stays at number 9 and 10 respectively but with significantly higher ranking points.
