Novak Djokovic remains world number one after US Open 2013 for reaching final

For reaching the US Open final for the fourth straight year, Novak Djokovic of Serbia will remain world number one once the ATP World Tour Rankings are updated on Monday, September 9.

The Serbian defeated first-time Grand slam semifinalist Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 2-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. This is Djokovic’s 50th match win in the season. He also improved his head-to-head series record against Wawrinka to 13-2.

The match against the ninth-seed Swiss number two was reminiscent of their Australian Open 2013 fourth round match which also went the distance with Djokovic winning 12-10 in the fifth set.

Djokovic is aiming to win his seventh career Grand Slam singles title on Monday when he faced either Rafael Nadal of Spain or Richard Gasquet of France. Djokovic trails Nadal 15-21 in their head to head series while he lead Gasquet 8-1 in their series.
