Pete Sampras thinks Roger Federer can increase his Grand Slam haul

Former top-ranked Pete Sampras believes that Swiss star Roger Federer still has what it takes to increase his already record-setting Grand Slam singles title haul if he regains that self-belief that he can do so.

In a recent interview with The Tennis Space website, Sampras said: “I do believe he can. People wrote me off. But what the great players have is belief, and once Roger has that belief back, and starts playing well again, I think he can win another major. He will at least contend. Maybe he won’t be the big favourite that he was around 2005. I think that if he is playing well, and stays healthy, he is capable of winning another major.”

Sampras held the record with the most Grand Slam singes titles for several years at 14 before Federer overtook him and now stands with 17 Grand Slam titles. Last year, Federer has overtaken Sampras with the most number of weeks at the top of the rankings.

Sampras may be relegated to third in the all time list as Rafael Nadal sealed his 13th Grand Slam singles title after winning the US Open 2013 title. The Spaniard could go on and overtake Federer if he’s healthy enough to compete in the next few years.
