Rafael Nadal express disappointment over Madrid’s losing Olympic bid

World number two Rafael Nadal expressed his disappointment over the decision not to award the hosting of the 2020 Olympic Games to the Spanish city of Madrid. On Saturday, the International Olympic Committee decided to award the honor to Tokyo, Japan via a voting that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentia. The third finalist was Istanbul, Turkey.

This is the third time that Madrid made its bid to become host of the Olympic Games and Nadal is one of the popular sporting personalities who have been campaigning to make this happen.

“It’s very hard and tiring for all of us, because the country and the city of Madrid worked a lot to have the chance so many times,” he said.

“We feel that we deserve it. I was disappointed because we felt that we were in a good position. All the country was very involved.

“I felt that after a lot of years working, I don’t know if it’s 100% fair that we go out at the first qualification when our opponents haven’t been in that position as many times.”

Rafael Nadal will be contesting his second US Open title by facing Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the final that will take place on Monday, September 9.
