Roger Federer defeats Mannarino to reach US Open 2013 fourth round

World number seven Roger Federer progressed to the fourth round of the US Open 2013 Tennis Championships on Saturday with a three-set decimation of Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-0, 6-2.

Mannarino gave all he could especially when he saved three match points but was unable to reverse the momentum and lost to the five-time US Open champion. The match only lasted an hour and 21 minutes.

“There’s always a lot of pressure coming out here on this court to perform, because you never know if you’re going to play well,” Federer said to the crowd after the match. “Tonight was one of those nights.”

“I think I was able to really use my serve well. Because it was breezy tonight again, I used the wind a bit better and I had more variation than him, which gave me more margin in my game,” he added.

The former top-ranked play will next face 19th-seed Tommy Robredo of Spain. Robredo ended the run of Daniel Evand of Great Britain 7-6(6), 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Federer has a 10-0 head to head series lead over Robredo and should be an overwhelming favorite to reach the quarterfinals where he could potentially meet rival Rafael Nadal. Federer and Rafael had never competed against each other at the US Open.
