Roger Federer faces a tough road to ATP World Tour Finals 2013 qualification

Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer will have to post impressive results in the upcoming ATP events in order to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals. This prestigious ATP 1500 Masters event features the world’s top eight players competing for lucrative prize money and significant ranking points.

Federer, a six-time ATP World Tour Finals champion, is currently in seventh place in the standings but is in danger of falling further due to the imminent threat by US Open 2013 semifinalists Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet who are both occupying the eighth and ninth spots respectively.

Three players have qualified for the year-end event: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Federer currently has 3,055 ranking points while Wawrinka has 2,925 and Gasquet with 2,765. Both Wawrinka and Gasquet will be playing next week in ATP 250 events. Wawrinka will be at the Malaysian Open tournament in Kuala Lumpur while Gasquet plays in Thailand and aims to defend the Thailand Open title.

Wawrinka could overtake Federer as the top Swiss player with a run to the final in Malaysia.

As for Federer, he will have a chance to increase his ranking points at his next tournament, the Shanghai Rolex Masters, which is an ATP 1000 Masters tournament.
