Serena Williams secures year-end number one ranking

The 2013 season is not yet over but with Serena Williams‘ spectacular run during the first nine months of the year has assured her of the year-end number one ranking. This will be the third time that Williams has ended the season as the world number one, having first done so in 2002 and the second one in 2009.

Serena Williams has compiled a 67-4 win loss record so far this season where she won nine WTA titles including two Grand Slam singles titles (French Open and US Open). She also won six Premier-level titles in Brisbane, Miami, Charleston, Madrid, Rome and Toronto. She also secured her first International-level title in Bastad, Sweden.

The American reclaimed the number one ranking on February 18 and became the oldest player to ever be ranked at the top. She’s already collected $9,077,322 in prize money, the most that one WTA player has collected in a season. With the season not being over, Williams could add more from the tally.

Williams received the biggest payout in women’s tennis history at the recently concluded US Open with $3.6 million with $2.6 million coming from winning the title and the $1 million bonus for winning the US Open series.

“Serena has proven time and time again throughout her career that she is an incredible champion, both on and off the court,” WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster said. “This season she continues to rewrite the record books, proving she is one of the sport’s greatest athletes of all time.”

“We are delighted to present Serena with the Year-End No.1 trophy, which signifies the terrific season that she has had in 2013. She is a great champion and we look forward to welcoming her back to Dubai in 2014,” said Salah Tahlak, Senior Vice President Corporate Communications of Dubai Duty Free and Tournament Director for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, a Premier-level event.
