Serena Williams sets tennis history with $3.6 million paycheck for winning US Open

World number one Serena Williams will be going home with a record $3.6 million paycheck for winning the US Open 2013 Championships. The winner’s prize money was set at $2.6 million but the American received an additional $1 million bonus since she won the US Open Series.

With 17 Grand Slam titles, Williams now only trails Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with just one (both players achieving 18 Grand Slam singles titles) in the all time list.

“I definitely felt the love today, so thank you all for the support – it’s an honor playing in New York, and I give all the love and glory to Jehovah,” Williams said. “Victoria’s such a great player and a great person too, and it was an honor to play against you. And thank you to everyone in the box too!”

Williams also participated in the women’s doubles event with sister Venus Williams. By reaching the semifinals, the sisters will get to split the $115,000 prize money for the achievement.
