Stanislas Wawrinka books US Open 2013 quarterfinal berth with win over Tomas Berdych

Ninth-seed Stanislas Wawrinka caused an upset at the US Open 2013 after eliminating last year’s semifinalist and world number five Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(6), 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain.

“Today I was really confident with my game, and I was playing really good,” said Wawrinka. “I think my best match against Tomas. It’s never easy to play him, but I did a good job. I was feeling really better than him.”

Wawrinka now improves his head-to-head series record against Berdych to 7-5.

This is Wawrinka’s second time to be in the quarterfinals of the US Open tournament. The first was back in 2010 where he lost to eventual semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. Youzhny advanced to the quarterfinals with a five-set win over 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt.

The Swiss world number ten has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the fourth time. His past three quarterfinal appearances concluded with a loss. He’s attempting to end the streak but will have to get past world number three Murray.
