Stanislas Wawrinka hopes for Federer’s resurgence

For the rarest time, Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka has posted a better result at a Grand Slam event than compatriot Roger Federer. The Swiss number two player reached the quarterfinals of the US Open 2013 tournament and could go further if he beats defending champion Andy Murray on Thursday.

Wawrinka was understandably happy about his good fortune but he also added that he’s sad to see his good friend Federer losing his fourth round match to Tommy Robredo.

“It’s a different situation, for sure. I’m really happy with me for myself with the year, what I’m doing right now, but I will prefer to have him still playing in the tournament, you know. I watched his match yesterday and it was not that good. I was sad for him, because he’s a good friend and I like when he’s winning Grand Slam titles. I hope he will come back stronger,” Wawrinka said after defeating fifth seed and last year’s semifinalist Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.
