Tomas Berdych to face Swiss number two Wawrinka in US Open 4th round

World number five Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic is through to the US Open 2013 fourth round and will face Switzerland’s number two player Stanislas Wawrinka.

Berdych continued his winning streak against France’s Julien Benneteau in their third round match on Sunday 6-0, 6-3, 6-2. The Czech star has yet to lose a set in this tournament. He’s a defending semifinalist in New York.

“It was a bit hot, a bit humid, but otherwise [the] tennis was good,” Berdych said. “Finally, I managed to stay focused from the first point until the last. I took all my chances that I had and won in straight sets.”

Wawinka leads the head to head series against Berdych at 6-5 and the latter is not going to take this upcoming match for granted.

“He’s a great player, [a] really strong, powerful player,” said Berdych. “It’s always tough to play against him. Usually we [have] had some great battle together. I need to adapt my game a little bit, because he’s so powerful. I know if I’m if fit and if I play well, I have a chance.”

Wawrinka earned a fourth round spot after defeating Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-6(7).

“I’m really happy,” said Wawrinka. “It was a tough fourth set. We were both playing good. It was physically really difficult with the heat and humidity today.”
