Venus Williams eliminates Victoria Azarenka at Pan Pacific Open 2013

Former top-ranked Venus Williams produced an upset based on current rankings at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2013 in Tokyo on Tuesday after she eliminated current world number two Victoria Azarenka in their second round match 6-2, 6-4.

The win means that Williams maintains an unbeaten record versus Azarenka at 3-0. Their previous meeting was at the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February 2010 where Williams prevailed.

Azarenka, fresh from a runner-up finish at the US Open in New York, was noticeably subdued on the match and posted several double faults. Williams sealed the first set in 35 minutes. The second set was a much tighter affair with Azarenka breaking back to level the set at 4-4. However, Williams broke back once again and served for the match. The match lasted 1 hour and 21 minutes.

Williams will face Romania’s Simona Halep in the third round match on Wednesday.
