Wawrinka’s positive outlook despite US Open semifinal loss

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka will continue his positive approach and outlook despite having lost a tough five-set match at the US Open 2013 semifinals against top-ranked Novak Djokovic. Djokovic won the match 2-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in a match that his reminiscent of the Australian Open 2013 fourth round encounter between the two with the Serbian winning the match on his way to a fourth title in Melbourne.

“That’s how I see my life in general and my tennis career,” Wawrinka said. “After the match in the Australian Open a lot of people were thinking it’s going to be tough for me to lose that kind of match, but in the end I took all the positives from the match and I’m here now playing the semi-final. Today I lost again, but I’m back in the Top 10 and I’m playing my best tennis. I need to do the same.”

“The only thing that I can see, that’s everything I’m doing outside the match, on the practice courts, on my life in general, is the good things and I’m on the right way. I just need to continue to practise hard and to try to get more victories like I did these two weeks,” he added.

Wawrinka has had a productive 2013 season, having won a claycourt tile in Estorial, reached the final in Buenos Aires, Madrid Masters and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. His run to the US Open semifinal was impressive at best, having eliminated defending champion and world number three Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.

“It’s the last Grand Slam of the year, so it’s always a different challenge,” he said. “You always want to make a great result. It’s a big city, quite an amazing city. It’s an emotional time here and I think when you play well you enjoy much more because you play on a big court, a big stadium in front of a lot of people, and that’s the way to enjoy the tournament.”
