Williams sisters beats top-ranked Errani-Vinci to reach US Open 2013 doubles semifinals

Serena and Venus Williams avenged their Australian Open defeat to Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci by beating them at the US Open 2013 women’s doubles quarterfinal on Thursday. The sisters, 13-time Grand Slam doubles titlists, entered the event as unseeded players but were the better players against the world’s number one doubles team and the defending champion at Flushing Meadows. The final score was 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and five-minute match.

“We’re really excited,” Serena Williams said. “They beat us the last time we played, they’re playing so well and they’re the No.1 team, so we went in there with low expectations, and just trying to have fun.

“We weren’t thinking about revenge – we were just thinking about what we could do to win the match.”

The sisters will next face fifth-seeds Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in the semifinals.

“We’re not thinking about the final,” Serena Williams said. “We’re shocked we’ve gotten this far – it’s only our second tournament of the year in doubles, so we’re just happy to still be in the tournament and we’re just thinking about tomorrow’s semifinal.”

The other semifinal was already contested on Thursday with eighth seeds Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty advancing to the final after defeating tenth seeds Zheng Jie of China and Sania Mirza of India. This is the third Grand Slam doubles final for Barty and Dellacqua. Their past two finals did not go to their favor, finishing runners up at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
