WTA won’t recognize Venus Williams’ 129.9 mph serve in Tokyo

In a surprising turn of events, the 129.9 mph serve made by Venus Williams during her quarterfinal match versus Eugenie Bouchard on Thursday at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo won’t be recognized as an official record by WTA.

According to reports, WTA will only recognize serve speeds recorded by IDS, the official statistician of the WTA Tour. Unfortunately, it’s not the company that was collecting the data in Tokyo.

“I know I’ve been serving a lot harder in this tournament since I’ve come back from my back injury,” Williams said in an interview by TennisTV.com about the record-setting serve. “It feels good, but I don’t know if it was that hard. I hope it was.”

Venus Williams currently owns the world’s fastest serve by a female tennis player at 129 mph which she achieved at the 2007 US Open. Not surprising was that her younger sister Serena comes in close second with 128.6 which was made this year at the Australian Open.
