Andy Murray withdraws from ATP World Tour Finals 2013, citing rehabilitation from back surgery

World number three Andy Murray has officially announced his withdrawal from the year-end ATP World Tour Finals which will take place in November. The Wimbledon champion was forced to pull out of the season-ending event in London due to continuing rehabilitation from a recent back surgery that he had. He’s now looking forward to a more successful 2014 season.

“I’m really disappointed not to be playing this year, I love playing in front of my home crowd, it’s a great atmosphere,” said Murray. “All the players look forward to competing in London and I’ll be doing my best to qualify again for the tournament next year.”

“It’s unfortunate that Andy will be unable to play in this year’s tournament. He’s had a historic year on the Tour and of course he’ll be missed. We wish him all the best as he continues his recovery from surgery, and we hope to see him back stronger than ever for the 2014 season,” said ATP World Tour Finals Tournament Director Andre Silva.

Murray’s withdrawal means that there are five berths in contention for the year-end event. So far only Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer have qualified for the singles event. Juan Martin del Potro, Tomas Berdych, Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet currently are holding the fifth to ninth spots in the Race to London Standings.
