Carlos Moya named as new Spain Davis Cup team captain

Former top-ranked Carlos Moya, who retired from professional tennis in 2010, will be the new captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team starting in 2014. This development was known after the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) has opted not to extend the contract of incumbent captain Alex Corretja. Corretja’s contract ends by the end of this year.

Another former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrer, was also considered for the position.

Corretja became the team’s captain in 2012. The previous leader was Albert Costa, the 2002 French Open Champion, who led Spain’s title-winning run in 2011. In 2012, Team Spain reached the final but lost to Czech Republic. This year, the team suffered a suprise opening round loss to Canada but retained their place in the elite World Group after winning their rubber against Ukraine last month.

“The RFET announces that, guided by the criteria of the sporting department and with the backing of the board of directors, it has been decided not to extend Alex Corretja’s contract as captain of the men’s national tennis team on Dec. 31,” the RFET said in a brief statement on Thursday.

Moya is the first Spaniard to reach the summit of the world rankings and held the post for two weeks.
