Caroline Wozniacki clinches Luxembourg Open title, beats Beck

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki won the Luxembourg Open title on Sunday after she defeated Annika Beck of Germany in straight sets. This is Wozniacki’s first title of the 2013 season. The Dane won the match in easy fashion 6-2, 6-2.

“I know there are a lot of Germans here so you probably wanted Annika to win today, but she had such a great week and she’ll have many more finals to come,” Wozniacki said. “Annika, you’re a great player and a great fighter, and most of all you’re a great person and fun to hang out with off the court. Your team is very nice too. Just keep working hard and I’m sure we’ll have many more finals in the future.

“Thank you to all the fans who came out all week. This is a great event. We all love playing here.”

Wozniacki, who opted not to defend the Kremlin Cup title this week, was a former finalist at this event back in 2008 where she finished runner-up to Elena Dementieva.

“Last time in the finals here it was five years ago,” she said. “I’m happy to make it a step further this year and take the title.”

Wozniacki now has a total of 21 WTA titles. Though the title victory did not place her in the elite eight for the WTA Championships, she will still be travelling to Istanbul as she’s been named as the first alternative at the year-end event.

Beck has nice words to say to the former top-ranked.

“Congratulations for playing so well in the final Caroline,” the 19-year old said. “We practiced once here and I was very nervous there, and here today too! But I hope you have a good week in Istanbul this week.”
