Dinara Safina to officially retire from professional tennis in 2014 – reports

Former top-ranked Dinara Safina of Russia is reportedly set to announce her imminent retirement from professional tennis in 2014. The Russian has been inactive on tour since her second round loss in Madrid in 2011. Recurring back injuries was reportedly the reason why she’s opted not to compete on tour.

Safina may not have won a Grand Slam singles title but she did win a Grand Slam back in 2007 when she won the women’s doubles title at the US Open. She reached the finals of the Australian Open in 2009 and the Roland Garros in 2008 and 2009. She also won a silver gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, losing to fellow Russian Elena Dementieva.
