Grigor Dimitrov captures first career title in Stockholm

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov won his first career ATP title on Sunday after stunning third-ranked David Ferrer of Spain 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the If Stockholm Open final. The 22-year old tennis sensation became the eighth first-time titlist this season. Dimitrov converted his first match point to secure the victory in two hours and 14 minutes.

Dimitrov, also known as the boyfriend of Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova, denied Ferrer his third title of the season. They’ve met three times prior to this match with Ferrer winning those matches. With the victory, the head-to-head series record now stands at 1-3.

Choosing a new coach seemed to pay off for the young Bulgarian and now he’s going home with €95,700 plus 250 ranking points. He will also rise to a career-high number 22 on Monday. His new coach is Roger Rasheed, former coach of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Dimitrov will have little time to celebrate the victory as he travels next to Basel for the Swiss Indoors tournament where he is seeded eighth and will face Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic in the opening round.
