Lleyton Hewitt to compete at this week’s Erste Bank despite wrist problems

Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt of Australia said that he still plans to compete at this week’s Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria despite ongoing wrist problems. The two-time Grand Slam champion plans to have his sore wrist assessed afterwards. The Australian lost his opening match at the Shanghai Masters this week to Andreas Seppi of Italy.

“He has been having some treatment on his wrist and if it remains an issue shall have it looked at further when he returns to Australia later in the year,” said David Drysdale, Hewitt’s manager. “No real formal assessment will be made until he comes back to Australia.”

Hewitt’s last tournament of the season is expected to be in Vienna and he’ll be setting his sights in a slew of tournaments in January 2014 where is slated to compete at the Brisbane International and the AAMI Classic exhibition in Kooyong before proceeding to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
