Mikhail Youzhny dethrones David Ferrer to win Valencia Open 500 title

Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny won his second ATP title of the 2013 season after dethroning defending champion David Ferrer 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the Valencia Open 500 tournament. This is Youzhny’s 10th career title. His last title victory was at Gstaad, Switzerland in July.

“It is a really good tournament and has a great atmosphere,” Youzhny said. The Russian goes home with €360,000 and earned 500 ranking points which saw his ATP Race to London standings rise by six to number 14. Three-time champion Valencia Open champion David Ferrer still gets a generous €162,300 cash prize and 300 ranking points for finishing as runner-up. The Spaniard world number three also finished runner-up in Stockholm a week ago but despite these losses, he said he’s satisfied with his performances.

“The truth is that Youzhny played very good,” he said. “He sliced and served very well. He was more comfortable then me on court, I was missing touch.”

Both Youzhny and Ferrer are headed to Bercy for the Paris Masters 1000 title which will mark as the last tournament of the year prior to the ATP World Tour Finals. Ferrer already qualified while Youzhny still has a running chance of qualifying by winning the Paris title.
