Novak Djokovic won’t compete at Valencia Open despite wildcard offer

World number two Novak Djokovic has opted not to take the wildcard for next week’s Valencia Open despite the tempting prospect of getting much needed ranking points to regain the number one ranking.

The Valencia Open tournament is an ATP 500 event, meaning the winner will get 500 ranking points.

Tournament Director Juan Carlos Ferrero said that it would be great to have Djokovic in this year’s tournament.

“It would be really spectacular if we had on a tournament such a top player as Novak. His participation would greatly help the rating of the tournament,” Ferrero, a former world number one player himself, said.

Djokovic will make use of next week to rest sufficiently in time for the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour Finals. Djokovic can still gain ranking points in Paris since he lost in the earlier rounds at this ATP 1000 event a year ago. The Serb is the defending champion at the ATP World Tour Finals.
