Roger Federer not relying on Murray’s withdrawal to qualify for ATP World Tour Finals

Roger Federer said that he’s not going to be complacent despite the fact that his chances of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals has increases following the withdrawal of Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. Murray pulled out of the event due to ongoing rehabilitation from a recent back surgery.

“I hope I don’t have to rely on it. If I have to, I have to. But that’s not really what I want,” the Swiss tennis star said.

“I’m just going to focus on trying to play well. I’m just going to try to have a good tournament in Basel and Paris. In the end, if I get the invite, I’ll be there.”

Federer’s campaign to qualify for the elite eight-man year-end event suffered a setback after he lost his third round match at the Shanghai Masters to Gael Monfils of France. He also lost his doubles match with China’s Ze Zhang later in the day.

“Roger just finished his singles match,” said Zhang. “I should have given him more support. But we lost the first one too quickly. [In] the second set, both of us were a little bit [calmer] than in the first set because it was our last chance. But when it came to the tie-break, a lot of times it’s all about luck.”
