Tomas Berdych‘s campaign to become part of the ATP World Tour Finals halted abruptly at the Swiss Indoors Basel this week after the Czech world number six was eliminated in the opening round by Ivo Karlovic 4-6, 7-6, 7-6. Karlovic, a semifinalist at the Kremlin Cup a week ago, improves his 2013 season with an 18-11 win-loss record.
Berdych would have been assured a place at the year-end event in London if he reaches the semifinals at this ATP 500 event. He’s next in line to qualify with a 650-point lead over seventh-placer Stanislas Wawrinka.
