David Ferrer stuns top-ranked Rafael Nadal to advance at Paris Masters final

World number three David Ferrer of Spain stuns world number one Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the Paris Masters 2013 tournament on Saturday. Despite being the defending champion at this event, Ferrer was deemed the underdog in his match against compatriot Nadal but he posted just his fifth victory in 25 meetings against the world number one 6-3, 7-5 to earn the right to meet world number two Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday at the Palais Omnisports in Bercy.

In 2012, Ferrer won his first and only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title to date after defeating Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in the final. He will have a chance to defend the title but will need to improve on the 5-10 head to head series record he has against Djokovic.

The victory would have assured Nadal the year-end number one ranking but the loss means that Djokovic still has a slim chance to clinching the world number one ranking by the end of the season. The Serbian will have a chance to fight for the top ranking at the ATP World Tour Finals in London next week should he win the Paris Massters title.
