Defending titlist Bernard Tomic receives wildcard for Apia International Sydney

Australia’s Bernard Tomic missed the direct entry for the Apia International Sydney, a tournament that he’s won earlier this year. Instead, organizers have granted the young tnenis player a wildcard for the event. Tomic won his maiden ATP title in this event last January.

The cut off for the ATP hardcourt event was number 49 which was just two ranking places higher than Tomic’s current rank of 51. Tomic will be playing against a tough field headed by world number five Juan Martin Del Potro. The Apia International Sydney runs from January 5 to 11 and is a lucrative warm-up event for the Australian Open 2014.

Other participants include Wimbledon 2013 semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz, 13th-ranked Nicolas Almagro, 16th-ranked Fabio Fognini and former Sydney titlists Dmitry Tursunov and Jarkko Nieminen.
