Melanie Oudin reveals having rhabdomyolysis, a muscle-damaging condition

American player Melanie Oudin revealed that she has a muscle-damaging condition called rhabdomyolysis which can be caused by intense exertion.

Oudin, who was a surprise quarterfinalist at the US Open 2009 tournament, said this development via her official Twitter account. She said that she’s “doing everything possible for a speedy” recovery.

Sam Duvall, Oudin’s agent, confirmed on Monday that it was the player who sent the tweets.

The 22-year old player is currently ranked 129th in the world. She garnered enough media coverage when she was 17 after she defeated Maria Sharapova on her way to the final eight in New York.

Oudin was admitted to the hospital last Wednesday where she was diagnosed with the condition. She’s advised not to partake in any type of exercise in the next few weeks to recuperate. She’s currently training at the USTA Player Development headquarters in Boca Raton.
