Novak Djokovic wins 40th career title, secures Paris Masters 2013 title

World number two Novak Djokovic became only the 15th player in the Open era to win 40 ATP Tour titles after the Serbian won the Paris Masters title on Sunday. Djokovic defeated last year’s champion David Ferrer 7-5, 7-5 in a match that lasted one hour and 52 minutes. This is Djokovic’s second Paris Masters title.

Djokovic now joins Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as active players on tour to win 40 titles or more. The Serbian is on a title run since his US Open final loss to Rafael Nadal – successfully defending the titles in Beijing and Shanghai and now in Bercy.

“I am definitely playing the best tennis this year now,” Djokovic said. “I’m playing on a very high level and have lots of confidence in myself, in my game.”

Djokovic received €522,100 and earned 1000 ranking points to keep his chances alive of finishing the season as world number one for the third straight year.

Ferrer’s loss means that the Spaniard has lost his seventh consecutive final this season. He received €256,000 and earned 600 ranking points for finishing runner-up.

“I think it was a really good match, really good rallies,” said Ferrer. “I play maybe better than yesterday, and I lost.

“I am happy with my game, because the last few tournaments I [played well] and I am happy with myself. Now I want to relax and be with my team, and tomorrow I travel to London for the last tournament of the season,” he added.

Djokovic is now 11-5 in head to head series against Ferrer and has won seven out of their eight meetings since 2009.

Both players are now in London for this week’s ATP World Tour Finals.
