Rafael Nadal defeats Wawrinka to reach ATP World Tour Finals semifinal

Spain’s Rafael marches on to the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals after defeating Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in an entertaining round robin match on Wednesday 7-6, 7-6. Despite only playing two matches so far in the round robin phase, Nadal has secured a semifinal berth in London since he also won his first match in straight sets.

The victory was also significant for Nadal as he has officially secured the year-end world number one ranking. The victory means that erstwhile two-time defending year-end number one player Novak Djokovic will have no chance to overtake Rafael Nadal even if he successfully defends the ATP World Tour Finals title. The Serbian will need to win the title in London and his two matches at the upcoming Davis Cup final against Czech Republic to clinch the number one title, provided that Nadal will not win more than one match at the ATP World Tour Finals.
