Rafael Nadal eliminates Gasquet to secure Paris Masters semifinal slot

World number one Rafael Nadal continues his quest for a sixth Masters 1000 title of the 2013 season after eliminating Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters on Friday. Up next for Nadal is fourth-ranked David Ferrer.

Nadal is now just a few matches away from securing the year-end number one ranking. The Spaniard must win the Paris Masters title, or have a result that is equal or better than erstwhile number one Novak Djokovic. Nadal’s best result in Paris was a runner-up run in 2007 (lost to David Nalbandian).

Nadal said it was great to see that the eight players that qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals made it to the quarterfinals of this ATP Masters 1000 event. The ATP World Tour Finals starts on Monday, November 4 at The O2 in London.

“It’s great to have all the best players playing well and having good results this year,” Nadal said. “Having the eight players in the quarter-finals also playing in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is great news.”
