Rafael Nadal targets third year-end number one ranking

Spain’s Rafael Nadal is aiming to finish a calendar season as world number one for the third time.

Nadal finished as world number one in 2008 and 2010. If he performs well enough at this week’s ATP World Tour Finals in London then he’s assured of that ranking. However, his rival Novak Djokovic has a running chance to reclaim the top-ranking if the Serbian wins the ATP World Tour Finals and his matches at the Davis Cup final next week.

In order to secure the year-end number one ranking, Nadal needs to win at least two matches at the ATP World Tour Finals. He’s grouped with David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Stanislas Wawrinka in Group A. Based on stats, he won’t have a problem beating them during the round robin stage. However, there’s always a lot of surprises in this very competitive year-end competition.
