Roger Federer qualifies for ATP World Tour Finals for 12th straight year

Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer is aiming to win the ATP World Tour Finals for a record seventh time after he secured a place in the eight-man season finale event for the 12th straight year. The ATP World Tour Finals takes place from November 4 to 11, 2013 at The O2 in London. Federer was assured a place in the event after winning his second round match at the Paris Masters this week, outlasting Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Federer, 32, is the most successful player at the ATP World Tour Finals, recording a 42-9 win-loss record. He won the titles in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011. He was runner-up to Novak Djokovic in last year’s final. He tied Ivan Lendl for the most consecutive appearance at the season-ending event at 12 while American Andre Agassi still holds the record with the most number of appearances at 14.

Federer now joins Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych. There are still two berths available after Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, who qualified earlier this year, had to withdraw after undergoing back surgery recently.

“[It’s] the absolute pinnacle of our sport,” Federer said. “You want to be able to showcase your talents against the best, with the biggest rivalries, in one of the coolest arenas in the world in front of amazing fans. For me it’s always been an honour to play there and I look forward to returning this year.”

“As a six-time champion Roger stands alone as the most decorated player in the history of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He is enormously popular here in London, where he has also won seven Wimbledon titles, and we’re delighted to welcome him back to The O2,” said ATP World Tour Finals Tournament Director Andre Silva.
