Romania’s Simona Halep concluded her 2013 season on a high note after winning the WTA Tournament of Champions title in Sofia, Bulgaria on Sunday after she defeated Samantha Stosur of Australia in a thrilling final 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

“I really wanted to win this tournament, so I’m just happy!” Halep said after the match. “It has been a great tournament for me. And well done to you Sam, you played well all week.”

The victory will also propel Halep’s ranking to a career-high number 11 in the world. She could easily make it for the first time in the world’s top ten with strong results during the first half of the 2014 season.

“I want to thank everyone who came to support me this week, they helped me a lot,” she said. “I also want to thank my team, my friends and my family, and of course Ilie Nastase who came to support me!”
