Stanislas Wawrinka beats Ferrer at ATP World Tour Finals, keeps semifinal hopes alive

World number eight Stanislas Wawrinka has a great chance to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals semifinals on his debut after he finished his campaign in the round robin stages with a 2-1 record. The Swiss player defeated third-seed David Ferrer 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 and will now wait on the results of the Rafael Nadal vs Tomas Berdych match later in the day (Friday, November 8).

If Rafael Nadal beats Berdych then Wawrinka will qualify. However, if Berdych defeats Nadal then it will be a different story. Berdych will then clinch the second and last semifinal spot in Group A. Nadal already secured the first semifinal spot in the group.

The loss means Ferrer has no chance of making it to the semifinals.

“It is difficult to recover against Stan because he served very well throughout the match,” said Ferrer. “In the third [set], he played better and my fitness was not good.

“Of course, I am happy with 2013. I reached my first Grand Slam final and could finish No. 3 or No. 4.”
