Top-ranked Chinese male player Wu Di secures Australian Open 2014 wild card

Top-ranked Chinese male tennis player Wu Di secured a wild card to the main draw of the upcoming Australian Open 2014 tournament for the second straight year after he won the Asia Pacific wild card event in Shenzhen, China on Sunday.

The 22-year old became the first Chinese male player to become part of a main draw match at the Australian Open earlier this year. He lost the opening round match to Ivan Dodig of Croatia in four sets. He will have a chance next year after he defeated compatriot Zhang Ze 6-0, 6-3 in the play-off tournament final.

“I know what this victory stands for,” the 207th-ranked player said.. “It means higher honour and more training opportunities. Apart from the national championships, I didn’t have any outstanding performances this year, and my ranking is really low. So this victory encourages me to train harder, keep pushing myself.

“Earlier this year, I also got the wild card to play in the main draw of Australian Open. It was a really high starting point and a very memorable experience. But I don’t think I had a clear goal after the Australian Open; the results were up and down. I want things to be different this time, so I will get some good rest and head to the winter training for the 2014 season,” he added.
