Andy Murray wins first match since return from three-month injury break

World number four Andy Murray secured his first victory since returning from a three-month injury break at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on Friday after dispatching Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4. The British tennis star lost his match yesterday to David Ferrer but the victory against Wawrinka means that he will be leaving the exhibition tournament in fifth place out of six contenders.

The 26-year old, who won the Wimbledon 2013 title in July, took a break in September to have a back surgery.

“I feel pretty good, a lot better than I did a few months ago. I just need to play more matches like this because the intensity’s a lot higher than you can get in practice,” Murray said after the match.

“It was good to get two matches against top players. Everyone needs matches at this stage, especially me. It’s been a perfect start and hopefully I’ll get better.”

Murray will be taking part at the Qatar Open in Doha which begins next week and marks the start of the 2014 season.
