BBC Sports Personality of 2013 awarded to Andy Murray

World number four Andy Murray has been voted at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, winning the 60th edition of the award after he became the first man from Great Britain to win the Wimbledon title in 77 years.

The 26-year old grabbed massive media coverage after he ended one of the longest waits in British sport after he defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in straight sets last July. Murray was almost close to winning the title a year ago at the All England Club when he was defeated by Roger Federer in a heartbreaking final. Murray avenged the defeat by outlasting the Swiss star in the London Olympics gold medal singles match at the same venue a few weeks later.

Murray was unable to attend to ceremony on Sunday in Leeds as he was training hard for the upcoming season at his training camp in Florida. He was presented with the award by 18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova.

The British sport star, sometimes being criticized for having a stern personality, said that he’s very happy to have won the award.

“No matter how excited I try to sound my voice still sounds incredibly boring. But I’m actually incredibly excited right now. That’s just my voice. I’m sorry.”
