Casey Dellacqua, Jordan Thompson secure Australian Open 2014 wildcards after winning playoffs

The Australian Open 2014 playoffs tournament concluded on Sunday with Casey Dellacqua and Jordan Thompson securing the titles and wildcard entries in the main draw of the first Grand Slam event of the season in Melbourne.

Dellacqua, the second-ranked Australian player behind Samantha Stosur, is assured to make her 11th appearance in Melbourne. Her best finish at her home Slam was a fourth round run back in 2008.

Meanwhile, in the men’s final of the Australian-only event, Jordan Thompson defeated former Wimbledon junior finalist Ben Mitchell in five gruelling sets 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1. This is 19-year old Thompson’s first Australian Open appearance.

The Australian Open 2014 tournament starts on January 13 at the Melbourne Park.
