Juan Carlos Ferrero to launch tennis academy in Shenzhen, China

Former top-ranked Spanish player Juan Carlos Ferrero is reportedly set to launch his eponymous tennis academy in China, a clear sign that tennis is gaining a lot of popularity in this side of the world.

Gemdale Group’s subsidiary, the Grand Gemdale Tennis ClubCo., Ltd., has signed an agreement with the JC Ferrero Academy to set up an international tennis academy in Shenzhen, China. Starting in 2014, Shenzhen will be staging an ATP 250 hardcourt event following the purchase of the rights of that outgoing Thailand Open tournament a few weeks ago.

The academy will feature a 5,000-seat Centre Court, 20 hardcourts (compised of 4 outdoor and 16 indoor courts) and 4 indoor claycourts. The academy will open later in 2014.

“I feel really excited about this and I really want to collaborate in this exciting project with Gemdale. I really surprised that this company has female scholar players and that the company is so committed to tennis. I hope to make my contribution with the Asian continent to continue promoting competition tennis,” Ferrero said.
