Premier-level Brussels Open bids adieu after three years

The Premier-level WTA tournament in Brussels has shut down after three years. This development came about after organizers find it too expensive to stage the event.

The Brussels Open was a claycourt WTA event that takes place a week prior the Roland Garros tournament. The event attracted top players such as Caroline Wozniacki, Marion Bartoli and Agnieszka Radwanska.

In a statement, the tournament organizers said that the “the current economic context and the ever-increasing investments to meet the demands of the WTA for the Premier label made it a difficult, near impossible task.”

The 2013 Brussels Open had a $250,000 prize money offer. There was lesser crowds in this year’s edition due to bad weather. The reigning champion is Estonian player Kaia Kanepi.
