World number one Rafael Nadal of Spain officially confirmed that he will participating at the Copa Claro 2014 tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina – the first time since 2005.

“After a time when I was unable to go, this year I’m going to return to the Buenos Aires tournament and I’m excited to play the Copa Claro again,” Nadal said.

Back then, Nadal reached the quarterfinals where he lost to 2004 French Open champion Gaston Gaudio of Argentina.

Argentina Davis Cup captain and tournament director Martin Jaite said: “We’re very happy to have Rafa, to have a world number one playing for the points in Argentina.”

Nadal made his return on tour after seven months of injury lay-off at Vina del Mar, Chile last February 2013 where he reached the final. He would go on to win a total of ten titles this season including 2 Grand Slam titles and five ATP Masters 1000 titles. He’ll go on to reclaim the top ranking by the end of the season.

Nadal was in Argentina late last month to take part in a series of exhibition matches against world number two Novak Djokovic and retired Argentine player David Nalbandian.

The Copa Claro tournament takes place at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club from February 10 to 16. Nadal also signed up for the newly-created ATP 500 claycourt in Rio de Janeiro.
